Mediation
A voluntary, confidential alternative to formal adjudication — where the parties reach their own resolution.
Download Mediation PDFMediation is a voluntary, confidential process in which a neutral third party helps the parties communicate, negotiate, and reach a mutually acceptable resolution. The mediator does not decide the outcome — the parties do.
Benefits of Mediation
Confidential
Everything discussed in mediation remains strictly private and cannot be used in subsequent proceedings.
Faster Resolution
Mediation typically resolves disputes more quickly than a formal investigation or adjudication process.
Party-Controlled
The parties — not a third-party adjudicator — decide the outcome, giving everyone a voice in the resolution.
Relationship-Preserving
A collaborative approach that can help maintain working relationships within the hockey community.
When is Mediation Available?
Mediation may be offered at various stages of the maltreatment complaint process. Both the complainant and the respondent must agree to participate.
Mediation is not appropriate in all cases — for example, it may not be suitable where there is a significant power imbalance or where the safety of a participant is at risk.
